Lumix firmware boosts hybrid shooting

Posted on Jun 23, 2025 by Adam Duckworth

Major new features for the S1RII, S1II and S1IIE include 8.1K video, Arri LogC3, focus stacking and tethered workflows

Panasonic has introduced a series of new firmware updates for its full-frame mirrorless Lumix S1RII, S1II and S1IIE. The updates aim to improve the shooting experience for stills and video and enhance functionality.

New updates include:

  • Urban Sports recognition – accurately capture dynamic movements like breakdancing, skateboarding and parkour, in addition to the existing human detection capabilities.
  • Focus stacking – synthesise images taken at multiple focus positions to produce a single image with deep depth of field and sharpness throughout.
  • Arri LogC3 – available using the DMW-SFU3A Software Upgrade Key (sold separately), enabling the colours to match ARRI’s digital cinema cameras.
  • Frame aspect ratio – options expanded from 10 to 17, enabling the simultaneous display of up to three frames.
  • Capture One – supports data transfer via Wi-Fi and wired LAN.

S1RII Firmware 1.2: Pushing the boundaries

  • The Lumix S1RII leads the charge with headline features including 8.1K and 7.2K Open Gate recording and RAW HDMI output for high-end video capture. Support for Arri LogC3 (via the optional DMW-SFU3A upgrade key) allows for seamless colour matching with ARRI digital cinema cameras – a massive boon for filmmakers. You also get HEIF 10-bit 4:2:0 recording, expanded aspect ratio overlays (17 options), and an impressive new focus stacking mode.
  • Sports and action shooters will benefit from an Urban Sports detection mode, optimised for fast, dynamic subjects like skaters and freerunners. File handling is also improved, with the ability to transfer images and video directly from memory cards to SSDs, record proxies internally while outputting RAW, and sync timecode via Bluetooth®. Enhanced support for external devices includes Capture One tethering, DJI RS4 Mini gimbal compatibility, and USB-LAN connectivity.
  • User experience also gets a polish: you can now reassign the focus ring as a control dial, tweak focus rotation direction, and choose from ten AF frame colours for greater visibility in all conditions.

S1II & S1IIE Firmware 1.1: Significant upgrades

  • The S1II and S1IIE models gain several shared enhancements, including Arri LogC3 support, expanded frame guides, the new focus stacking tool, Wi-Fi/LAN tethering via Capture One, and the same improved AF frame customisation as the S1RII.
  • A Creative Commitment.
  • These free updates signal Panasonic’s continued support for creators, ensuring its cameras evolve alongside the fast-paced demands of modern hybrid content production.
