From iPhone shoots to cinema rigs, Blackmagic’s embrace of Apple ProRes Raw marks a major step in flexibility for filmmakers
Blackmagic has announced support for Apple ProRes Raw across its software and hardware lineup, in a move set to transform workflows for filmmakers and editors. The free update, launched as DaVinci Resolve 20.2 and Blackmagic Camera 9.8 public beta, adds full compatibility with both ProRes Raw and ProRes Raw HQ formats.
The rollout extends to DaVinci Resolve, DaVinci Resolve Studio and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, with support for Blackmagic Video Assist 12G also arriving in an upcoming update. Footage shot on Apple’s new iPhone 17 Pro in ProRes Raw can now be edited natively in Resolve, making the codec more accessible across a wide range of productions.
“With the addition of ProRes Raw formats across our capture, playback and professional editing software products, we are continuing our commitment to software updates for existing products,” said Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design. “Pocket Cinema Camera 4K customers have always been able to record in compressed ProRes 422 formats, but now they will be able to record ProRes Raw and natively playback the files in DaVinci Resolve.”
The move underlines Blackmagic’s strategy of providing long-term value to users through free feature upgrades. ProRes Raw support strengthens Resolve’s position as an all-in-one platform for editing, colour, VFX and audio post, while enhancing compatibility between Blackmagic hardware and Apple’s expanding video ecosystem.
Both DaVinci Resolve 20.2 and Blackmagic Camera 9.8 public beta are available now to download for free.
