If you want a camera that shoots 8K video exclusively in black and white then Leica’s Q3 Monochrom is the compact for you
Leica has unveiled the Q3 Monochrom, the second dedicated black-and-white model in its acclaimed Q-series and the latest evolution of the brand’s century-long commitment to photographic purity. A full-frame compact, the Q3 Monochrom is built around a newly developed 60-megapixel monochrome sensor designed to capture only luminance, not hue -resulting in extraordinary sharpness, tonal depth and clarity unobtainable from colour-filter-based sensors.
The sensor employs Leica’s Triple Resolution Technology, enabling 60, 36 or 18 megapixel capture while maintaining exceptional dynamic range. With an ISO span from 100 to 200,000 and the fast Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens, the camera excels in low light, producing rich, noise-controlled images with the nuanced textures and micro-contrast monochrome photographers prize. Videographers can also record black-and-white footage at up to 8K resolution.
Externally, the £5800 Q3 Monochrom stays true to the familiar Q-series silhouette but embraces a darker, more minimalist aesthetic. The matte black metal body, monochrome engravings, refined leatherette and the absence of Leica’s signature red dot all underscore its singular focus. A 5.76-megapixel OLED viewfinder, tilting touch display and fast hybrid AF system bring modern responsiveness to the traditional craft.
With weather sealing to IP52, a digital zoom reaching 90mm, macro capability down to 17cm, and seamless integration with the Leica FOTOS app, the Q3 Monochrom is built for serious creative work in real-world environments. It is also the first Q camera to incorporate Content Credentials – digital signatures that verify image authenticity in line with the Content Authenticity Initiative.
