Huge 660W output with a new OmniColor engine, weather resistance and streamlined control are why the amaran Ray 660c is a winner.

Serious power used to come at a price in filmmaking lights – and not simply the number on the invoice. High output always meant big fixtures, cumbersome control boxes and a lot more equipment to transport, rig and power. The amaran Ray 660c shows just how rapidly that’s changing.

Sitting at the top of amaran’s new four-strong Ray family, this 660W full- colour COB fixture combines super-bright illumination with sophisticated colour control and a streamlined monolight design – a combination that struck a chord with Pro Moviemaker readers, who have voted it best hard light in our Gear of the Year Awards.

At the heart of the Ray series is amaran’s new OmniColor light engine. Rather than chasing output alone, the technology has been developed to deliver a fuller and more accurate spectrum.

Expanded red and blue output is joined by a new indigo emitter, which produces cleaner whites, more natural-looking skin tones and consistent colour reproduction. That’s a significant feature, as a powerful fixture is only truly useful when the quality of the light it produces is up to the job. And sometimes you simply need lots of it, which is where the Ray 660c’s position at the top of the range becomes important.

Its 660W output makes this a production workhorse, capable of delivering the punch expected from a serious hard source while retaining the creative possibilities of a full-colour fixture. Shape that output with suitable modifiers and it can form the basis of anything from a powerful key to more stylised, colour-rich lighting.

Amaran has worked to make this new generation easier to live with on set. The 660c and its smaller sibling the 360c use all-in-one monolight designs, reducing the collection of separate boxes that need to be positioned and rigged around a fixture.

The Ray family is also IP54-rated, ideal for when the weather refuses to cooperate.

Control has been given attention, too. A new FlowTurn knob is designed to allow both fine adjustments and rapid changes, while NFC makes adding fixtures to the amaran app a quick process. For productions requiring a more traditional professional lighting workflow, optional DMX control is available for the 360c and 660c.

Perhaps what’s most striking, though, is how accessible this level of lighting has become. The Ray family stretches from compact 60W and 120W fixtures aimed at highly mobile creators right through to these more powerful 360W and 660W production tools. That creates an ecosystem in which filmmakers can choose different levels of output while retaining the same underlying approach to colour and control.

At €659, the amaran Ray 660c brings an impressive combination of power and full-colour capability within reach of independent filmmakers and smaller production companies. It’s powerful, versatile, weather resistant and built around a new-generation colour engine.
