Five decades haven’t diminished the appeal of Sennheiser’s iconic MKH 416 shotgun mic, which now adds a Gear of the Year award to its remarkable story.

In a fast-moving industry where technology can become outdated almost overnight, surviving for half a century is incredible. Remaining the go-to professional tool after all that time is something else entirely.

Yet that’s exactly what the Sennheiser MKH 416 has achieved. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the compact shotgun microphone remains a familiar sight on film sets, broadcast productions and documentary shoots around the world. Now Pro Moviemaker readers have underlined its enduring appeal by voting it best XLR microphone in our Gear of the Year Awards.

The MKH 416 continues to do its job exceptionally well. Its combination of strong directivity, low self-noise and distinctive, highly intelligible sound makes it ideally suited to capturing dialogue. Put it on a boom, mount it to a camera or take it into the field and it delivers the dependable performance professionals need.

Sennheiser’s RF condenser design also makes the MKH 416 highly resistant to moisture and challenging weather conditions – a major advantage for documentary, news and location filmmakers who can’t stop shooting because conditions aren’t perfect.

But perhaps the greatest compliment is that the MKH 416 has become a benchmark. New shotgun microphones inevitably find themselves compared with it, while generations of sound recordists have grown accustomed to its character and reliability.

Cameras, recording formats and production workflows have transformed beyond recognition during its lifetime, but the MKH 416 hasn’t needed to. This bona fide audio legend is still capturing professional sound and winning new fans.

Sennheiser profile wireless

Raising the profile

Wireless audio is a crowded market, but smart design, backup recording and a uniquely versatile charging case helped the Sennheiser Profile Wireless earn our Editor’s Choice award.

At its heart are two compact transmitters and a receiver, providing a highly portable solution for interviews, vlogging, documentary work and other creator productions. Each transmitter incorporates its own microphone as well as a locking 3.5mm input for connecting an external lavalier. Onboard recording provides an important additional safety net, with up to 30 hours of internal recording available on each transmitter.

But it’s the clever charging case that really sets it apart. As well as storing and charging the system, it can be transformed into a handheld interview microphone by inserting a transmitter and fitting the supplied windscreen. It’s an elegantly simple idea that adds another shooting option without requiring creators to carry another dedicated mic.

Firmware updates have expanded the system further with Bluetooth connectivity for compatible smartphones, tablets and laptops. That’s why the Profile Wireless earns our editor’s choice.
