Sony FX5 brings Open Gate and internal raw

Triple base ISO and dual gain now while an upcoming firmware update will bring 240fps in 4K
Sony has unveiled the eagerly anticipated FX5, a compact full-frame addition to its Cinema Line that introduces several major firsts for the FX series, including Open Gate recording and internal X-OCN Raw capture.
Designed for filmmakers, commercial productions and high-end content creators, the FX5 combines a newly developed full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with Sony’s latest BIONZ XR2 image processor and dedicated AI processing unit. The result is a camera capable of recording 5K at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps and Full HD at up to 240fps, all while delivering more than 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3.
For the first time in an FX-series camera, users can shoot full 3:2 Open Gate footage using the entire sensor, making it ideal for projects destined for multiple aspect ratios and social media platforms. Sony has also added internal recording in its 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN Raw format, with new X-OCN C1 and C2 options reducing file sizes while maintaining high image quality and streamlining post-production.
The FX5 also introduces Sony’s new Dual Gain Shooting mode alongside three native ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12,800, allowing filmmakers to maximise dynamic range while keeping noise under control across a wide range of lighting conditions. AI-powered autofocus uses human pose estimation to recognise eyes, heads and bodies, while Auto Tracing White Balance combines visible light, infrared sensing and deep-learning algorithms to deliver more consistent colour in challenging environments.
Despite its powerful specification, the FX5 remains compact and lightweight, making it well suited to handheld work, gimbals and confined shooting locations. Five-axis in-body image stabilisation is joined by Dynamic Active Mode for smoother handheld footage, while a redesigned cooling system allows extended recording without overheating. The camera also features a brighter 3.5-inch multi-angle touchscreen, CineAlta-inspired BIG6 interface, wired LAN, dual USB-C ports, timecode support and compatibility with Sony’s new high-capacity NP-SA100 battery.
Two optional accessories launch alongside the camera. A detachable 7.07-million-dot OLED viewfinder offers HDR monitoring with up to 0.9x magnification, while a new XLR Handle Unit adds four-channel, 96kHz, 32-bit float audio recording for documentary, broadcast and professional production work.
Sony has also confirmed a future firmware update will add 240fps recording in X-OCN, Open Gate XAVC S-I recording, an improved vertical shooting interface and frame-grab functionality.
The Sony FX5 is available to pre-order now, with shipping expected from August. The body-only version is priced at £4700, while the version supplied with the XLR Handle Unit costs £5200.
