Arri goes Xtreme with new cinema camera

Posted on Aug 1, 2025 by Adam Duckworth

The Alexa 35 Xtreme redefines high-speed cinematography with up to 660fps and lower data demands thanks to the new codec

Arri has announced a major upgrade to its legendary cinema camera with the launch of the Alexa 35 Xtreme. The new model replaces the original Alexa 35 and adds a suite of powerful features, including frame rates up to 660fps, significantly longer pre-roll and a new Arricore codec designed for greater post-production flexibility at lower data rates.

Thanks to a more powerful processor and faster internal memory, the Alexa 35 Xtreme can now shoot up to 330fps while maintaining full 17 stops of dynamic range. A new Sensor Overdrive mode unlocks up to 660fps at 11 stops, reducing the need for a dedicated high-speed camera on set.

The camera also introduces Arricore, a new RGB codec that preserves full post-production flexibility – exposure, white balance and tint are not baked in – while significantly lowering data rates. Arricore is fully compatible with existing workflows and metadata, and launches in beta to encourage user feedback.

For documentary filmmakers and event coverage, pre-recording times are now five times longer. Users can capture 30 seconds of 4.6K Open Gate ProRes 4444 at 24fps or  five minutes in ProRes 422 HQ HD.

The Alexa 35 Xtreme brings improved Wi-Fi connectivity, including support for 5 GHz bands, mesh networking and auto-reconnect to known networks. Power consumption is also reduced by 10%, and the camera remains fully compatible with Arri’s existing accessories, mounts and CODEX drives.

Arri will offer Alexa 35 Xtreme as a new camera system or as an upgrade for existing users. The £13,740 upgrade will be available at Arri Service Centres starting immediately. Pricing for new kits will remain in line with current Alexa 35 models which is currently around £44,000/ $54,590, depending on exchange rates.
