Nikon and Red unveil ZR cinema camera

Posted on Sep 10, 2025 by Adam Duckworth

Look out Sony FX3 and Canon EOS C50 as Nikon and Red reveal a lightweight 6K cinema camera with Red colour science plus world-first 32-bit float audio for £2199

Nikon’s first camera made in collaboration with its sister company Red is the new ZR, the first complete camera in the Z CINEMA line and the lightest all-in-one full-frame cinema camera to date. Weighing just 540g, the ZR is built for filmmakers and creators who want uncompromising performance in a compact body and targets’s Sony’s FX3 and the new Canon EOS R50 that was recently unveield.

The ZR body is fully weather-sealed and will cost just £2199. It will be followed by a range of higher-spec cameras in future.

At its heart is a 6K full-frame sensor paired with Red’s renowned R3D NE codec, delivering up to 6K/60p recording with more than 15 stops of dynamic range. With a Dual Base ISO of 800/6400, the ZR preserves detail in both highlights and shadows, making it equally adept for carefully lit productions or unpredictable run-and-gun shooting.

The ZR’s 4-inch vari-angle monitor covers the DCI-P3 colour gamut, doubles as a control hub, and supports loading up to 10 custom 3D LUTs. It’s a serious tool for on-set monitoring – but Nikon hasn’t forgotten audio. The ZR is the world’s first camera to feature internal 32-bit float audio recording, capturing vast dynamic range without constant level monitoring. Sound can be adjusted freely in post with no clipping, whether recorded via internal mics or Nikon’s new ME-D10 digital shotgun mic.

Other highlights include 5-axis in-body stabilisation, fast intelligent AF with subject tracking, and focus-breathing compensation. Full weather sealing, long record times thanks to efficient heat dissipation, and wide compatibility with Nikon Z-mount and third-party lenses complete the package.

The ZR is also the first Nikon to have a dedicated multi-interface hotshoe, which will accept the new ME-D10 digital shotgun mic as well as third-party options from Tascam. For run-and-gun shooting, the ZR has advanced built-in mics that can record different sound patterns.
