Nikon’s second take on pro standard zoom

Nikon refines its flagship zoom with a lighter build, internal zoom mechanism and next-gen autofocus

Nikon has recently unveiled its second-generation Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II, a major update to one of its most important professional zooms. The lens, designed for full-frame Nikon Z or Red cameras, is the first pro-spec 24-70mm f/2.8 to feature an internal zoom mechanism, so the barrel doesn’t extend or retract as you zoom.

At just 675g/1.5lb, it’s also the lightest lens in its class, but the price you pay has been upped to £2599/$2797. For that, you get a reworked optical design with fewer, but more advanced elements, promising sharper results, smoother bokeh and improved close-up performance.

The AF is said to take a leap forward with Nikon’s Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor, delivering AF speeds up to five times faster and 50% quieter than before, with more accurate subject tracking when zooming. Other refinements are a rounded 11-blade aperture, advanced coatings and improved weather sealing. Minimum focus distances have been shortened to 0.24m/9.4in at 24mm and 0.33m/13in at 70mm.
