Canon’s PowerShot turns 30 with a special edition

All hail a special anniversary version of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III

Canon is celebrating the 30-year anniversary of its PowerShot compact digital camera line with the announcement of an Anniversary Edition PowerShot G7 X Mark III, due for release in April 2026. The £860 special model commemorates three decades of PowerShot cameras, which have played a key role in making high-quality digital imaging accessible to a broad range of users.

The PowerShot story began in July 1996 with the launch of the PowerShot 600. Since then, the range has continually evolved to reflect changing creative needs, expanding from beginner-friendly compacts to advanced models aimed at enthusiasts, professionals and content creators. More recent additions such as the PowerShot V10 and PowerShot V1 reflect Canon’s growing focus on video-first workflows and creator-led design.

Over the past 30 years, the PowerShot line has introduced several notable innovations, including lens-based image stabilisation in the PowerShot Pro90 IS, Raw image capture in the G Series, and integrated active cooling in the PowerShot V1 to enable longer 4K recording times. These developments have helped maintain the relevance of compact cameras in an increasingly hybrid photo-video landscape.

The Anniversary Edition PowerShot G7 X Mark III features a new limited graphite-coloured body, a twill-patterned front ring and a dedicated 30-year anniversary logo printed on the camera. It will also be supplied in a specially designed anniversary presentation box. Core performance remains unchanged, retaining the 1.0-inch stacked CMOS sensor with approximately 20.1 million effective pixels and a bright 4.2x optical zoom lens.

Designed with creators in mind, the G7 X Mark III continues to offer strong stills performance alongside video-focused features such as its dedicated Video Blog shooting mode, making it a fitting tribute to the PowerShot legacy. More info from Canon.
