Sigma announces 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary lens

Posted on Oct 8, 2026 by Lily Smith

Sigma has announced the release of an all-new 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary Lens – and a new Nikon Z Mount system for the popular 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary.

Japanese lens and camera manufacturer Sigma has unveiled two new upcoming launches for the coming months. The 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary, a telephoto zoom lens for APS-C cameras, launches on 22 October and offers uncompromising optical performance in a compact body. The 5 November will then see the launch of a new Nikon Z mount for the Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary – an all-in-one zoom lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras.

Starting with the new Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary, this telephoto zoom lens condenses uncompromising sharpness and close-up capability into a palm-sized body.

Key features:

  • Thoroughly compact, lightweight design
  • Uncompromising optical performance and shooting functionality
  • Supports comfortable shooting of both stills and video
  • Available mounts: Sony E-mount, FUJIFILM X Mount, Canon RF Mount

Thoroughly compact, lightweight design

A highly versatile zoom range of approximately 75-180mm in 35mm equivalent terms, a constant F2.8 aperture, uncompromising optical performance and full-fledged shooting features are all condensed into a compact body just 99mm long and weighing a mere 390g. It meets every high portability and mobility requirement of an APS-C lens, while raising the class’ standard for both performance and functionality, making it a definitive APS-C telephoto zoom lens.

With the Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary joining the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary and Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary already on the market, the constant F2.8 zoom series is now complete, covering everything from ultra-wide-angle to telephoto. All three lenses together weigh less than 1kg, making it possible to put together a system that combines high performance with genuine mobility.

Uncompromising optical performance and shooting functionality

An optical construction that combines one FLD glass element, three SLD glass elements and four aspherical elements in exactly the right arrangement achieves both high optical performance and compact dimensions. Throughout the zoom range, from the center of the frame to the edges, various optical aberrations are corrected to achieve exceptionally high contrast.

The large bokeh and compression effect of a telephoto lens equivalent to approximately 180mm in 35mm terms enable expression that ranges from portraiture that makes the subject stand out to flat product photography where perspective is kept in check.

The optical design minimizes focus breathing. Because shifts in the angle of view during focusing are suppressed, the lens supports natural video expression with little change in composition.

Supports comfortable shooting of both stills and video

In addition to high-speed AF driven by an HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear motor, the OS2 image stabilisation algorithm delivers 6.5 stops of optical stabilisation at the wide end and 4.5 stops at the telephoto end. Everything a telephoto zoom needs for demanding shooting conditions is brought together here in optimal balance.

Switches such as the focus mode switch and the OS switch have been removed, giving the lens a minimal, easy-to-understand interface that stays intuitive to operate despite its high functionality.

In addition to a dust- and splash-resistant structure, the frontmost surface of the lens has a water- and oil-repellent coating, allowing photographers to shoot without concern even in difficult outdoor environments.

Alongside the launch of the new 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary, Sigma has also announced a new Nikon Z mount system for its 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary, allowing Nikon users to experience the world’s first zoom ratio of 18.8x for an APS-C format mirrorless lens.

Key features:

  • Wide-angle, super-telephoto and close-up photography all in one lens
  • High-speed autofocus and image stabilisation for effortless shooting with reliable results
  • Uncompromising optical quality that redefines the standard for super-zoom performance

The 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary features an 18.8x zoom ratio, the world’s first for an APS-C format mirrorless lens. Covering the entire range from wide-angle to super-telephoto, this extremely versatile lens brings the full range of photographic subjects within reach, from landscapes and portraits to wildlife and sports photography.

Capture detailed close-ups with ease

With a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2, the 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary captures detailed close-ups with ease. Its HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor provides exceptionally fast, smooth and accurate autofocus – ideal for fast-moving subjects such as birds and aircraft. The lens offers 6 stops of image stabilisation at the wide end and 4.5 stops at the telephoto end, helping photographers achieve blur-free results even at longer focal lengths and in low light.

A control algorithm including AF drive and communication speed optimisation has been developed specifically for Nikon Z Mount interchangeable lenses. In addition to realising high-speed AF, the lens also supports AF-C (Continuous AF) and in-camera aberration correction. The mount is rubber-sealed to cater for use in a variety of environments.

The Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary is priced at £699 and launches on 22 October. The Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS | Contemporary Nikon Z Mount is priced at £599 and launches on 5 November. Find out more at sigma-global.com.
