Documentary

Capture real life in its raw form

Documentary filmmaking remains one of the most influential forms of visual storytelling. Real lives, real voices and real events converge through the lens of a filmmaker with something meaningful to say. Always one of the most hotly contested Filmmaker of the Year categories, the documentary class celebrates those who shape truth into cinema, balancing narrative craft with striking visuals and immersive sound.

What defines a great documentary isn’t just the weight of the subject matter but the skill with which the story is told. A powerful documentary can highlight a global crisis, investigate a social injustice or explore a political situation with depth and nuance. The best work doesn’t only inform and engage audiences but also sparks discussion, ignites action and prompts genuine change.

But documentary filmmaking is far broader than hard-hitting journalism. Some of the most memorable films simply uncover the extraordinary in the everyday: a local community fighting for its identity, a craftsman dedicated to a dying art, an athlete chasing a dream or an individual overcoming adversity. Intimate human stories told with honesty and creative vision are just as impactful as sweeping global narratives.

In this category, we want to see documentaries shaped with intention: films where visuals don’t just accompany the story, but elevate it. Where sound design draws viewers in. Where structure, pacing and cinematography combine to create a compelling emotional journey.

Whether your documentary spans continents, takes place in a single room, explores cultural issues, personal stories or creative pursuits, the goal is to make audiences feel, think and even see the world differently. Make your filmmaking speak for those whose stories deserve to be told.

Content creator

For experts at engaging the social generation

Social media video is one of the fastest-growing forms of professional content production. Brands and agencies now rely on short-form vertical video and rapid-fire storytelling to cut through the constant noise of online platforms. Social content isn’t an add-on any more; it’s the heart of commercial marketing.

Our new category rewards creators mastering the art of the scroll-stopping visual. In a sub-60-second vertical video for TikTok or YouTube Shorts or a longer-format brand film, instant impact and polished execution matter.

But social content isn’t only about commercial briefs. Some of today’s talented filmmakers learnt their craft creating for their own channels on YouTube, where production value keeps rising and storytelling and creativity carry weight. Being a YouTuber remains an aspirational career path for Gen Z, and the quality rivals broadcast.

Our award isn’t about viral numbers or subscriber counts. We want to see quality content that suits its platform and speaks to its audience with skill, inventiveness and editorial purpose. Whether for YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok, Instagram or another platform, if your work tells a story with style, submit it.

It can be a branded campaign, vlog, YouTube documentary, online series, vertical short, product review or tutorial. If it’s attention-grabbing, grows communities and brings professional production value to the online world, it’s time to share it with fellow filmmakers! Display your digital creativity and prove how powerful social-first video can be.

Lighting

For masters of controlling mood and atmosphere

Great lighting isn’t switching on a lamp. It is shaping mood, directing attention and sculpting visual depth. It’s the quiet force in every compelling frame, made using natural ambience, practical lights or a studio lighting rig. This category honours creators who treat light as a storytelling language in its own right.

The award recognises lighting that enhances the tone and cohesion of a project. It doesn’t matter whether you use a high-end studio with a dozen fixtures or practical sources in a single living room. What matters is intention, consistency and the ability to transform a scene through the carefully controlled interplay of ambient and artificial light.

If you use light to enrich atmosphere, carve out emotion and elevate moments on screen, it’s your time to shine. Let the industry see how your best lighting work transforms storytelling.

Sponsored by Amaran

Lighting can make or break a project, and every filmmaker knows that the right set-up isn’t something you leave to luck. You need fixtures that are reliable, creative and affordable enough to use every day – which is exactly why Amaran is the perfect sponsor for this year’s lighting category.

In a landscape where creators are expected to produce broadcast-worthy visuals on super-lean budgets, Amaran has become the go-to brand for high-performance lighting that doesn’t drain
your wallet. From compact on-camera units and versatile tubes to punchy COB lights and sleek panels, its ecosystem offers filmmakers the freedom to craft pro-grade lighting anywhere, from a home studio to a fast-turnaround commercial shoot.

They deliver genuine, cinema-ready output with intuitive operation, making it easy to lift production values instantly. And with the powerful Amaran app bringing full remote control to your phone or desktop, adjusting brightness, colour and effects becomes seamless. It’s a modern, creator-friendly workflow that empowers beginners and seasoned pros alike.

By backing the lighting class, Amaran is celebrating the craft that underpins all great images – and championing the filmmakers who shape light into storytelling.

Commercial & corporate

Honouring the filmmakers behind brand-led storytelling

The award’s flagship category platforms work that promotes a client product, explains a service, champions a charity or elevates a brand’s identity.

If you produce branded content, commercial spots, promotional films, sales videos or campaign-led packages across multiple formats, this category is for you. It’s open to both pro-bono projects and client-paid commissions that showcase your talent, creativity and expert ability to deliver a brief.

If you’ve crafted a standout advert, character-driven short, innovative promo or a whole campaign, we want to see how you blend storytelling with commercial understanding.

We celebrate filmmakers who help clients communicate, connect and grow through the stunning power of film. Show us your creativity and your commercial acumen today.

Music video

The sound of creativity

Music videos are visual playgrounds, an exciting arena where boundaries dissolve, experimentation thrives and imagination leads the way. For generations of directors, editors and cinematographers, music video work has been the place to learn their craft, build a visual voice and push creative technique to its extremes.

The music video category celebrates artistic freedom. There are no rules on style, genre or scale. If you’re crafting a gritty one-take performance piece for a local band or producing a high-concept cinematic short for a chart-topping artist, we are looking at how the imagery elevates the track and enhances the emotional impact.

Sound

Audio worthy of an audience’s attention

Sound doesn’t just support a film but defines it. Our sound category recognises creators who bring stories to life through exceptional audio recording, mixing and sound design. Whether you’re a dedicated specialist or a filmmaker who delivered standout audio as part of a larger project, exhibit your best work here.

We’re looking for films where audio is more than an afterthought – where every element, from dialogue clarity to atmospheric texture, enhances the final piece. Maybe you crafted an immersive soundscape to transport viewers into another world, or solved problems to get clean audio in a noisy, unpredictable location. No matter how, if the sound elevates the story, we want to hear it.

We celebrate intentional mixes, thoughtful design, audio that seamlessly complements visuals and recording that’s both technically and creatively on point. Whether subtle and cinematic or bold and experimental, outstanding sound deserves recognition.

So send us your best work. Let the judges experience a world not through sight, but your carefully crafted sound.

Sponsored by Sennheiser

Sennheiser is ideal for filmmakers who demand uncompromising audio quality, thanks to a portfolio that has you covered in virtually every production scenario. From industry-standard XLR shotguns to compact on-camera mics for hybrid shooters, the brand has mastered the art of delivering clean, consistent sound in the most challenging environments.

Its wireless systems are now the benchmark for on-set reliability, with robust lavaliers and transmitters trusted across documentary, broadcast and commercial productions. And a unique product such as the innovative Profile Wireless system is having a big impact on the creator and vlogging space with its handheld mic option, specially designed for a fast, frictionless workflow.

Add Sennheiser’s deep ecosystem of professional accessories – handheld reporter mics, monitoring headphones, USB podcasting solutions, VR recording tools and wind protection – and it is clear why Sennheiser remains such a respected name in production audio.

The appeal is that Sennheiser gear just works. Whether you’re recording dialogue, ambience or reportage, you can confidently rely on the brand’s engineering pedigree to deliver superb sound on every take.

Open

Show the world your boldest and most creative vision

Anything and everything is welcome here. Submit films that don’t fit into a commercial, documentary or events box, such as passion projects, experimental pieces, long-form features or short, sharp bursts of creativity. If your project deserves a wider audience, send it in.

There are no limits on genre, length or style. Your film might be self-funded, commissioned, made for charity or just for the joy of storytelling. It can be your own work or a team effort on a large or small scale. What matters is originality.

Every year we get a diverse mix of entries from filmmakers who relish creative freedom. With no client to please and no stylistic constraints, it’s often where we see the boldest, most imaginative work in the competition.

Whether your project is polished, experimental, personal or wildly ambitious, let your creativity run free. Show us the film only you could make.

Cinematography

Big-screen impacts on indie budgets

In the last decade, streaming platforms have raised audience expectations to incredible heights. Viewers now enjoy breathtaking cinematography every day, shaped by bold lighting, dynamic movement, inventive composition and polished post-production. But that cinematic standard no longer belongs exclusively to large-budget studios. Thanks to today’s advanced cameras, lenses, lighting tools and grading workflows, independent filmmakers and small production companies are producing work that looks every bit
as impressive.

This award celebrates that shift. It recognises cinematography that delivers true visual artistry on real-world budgets – where imagination, technical skill and smart decision making replace the need for massive crews. Whether the result was achieved through carefully sculpted natural light, masterful handheld camera work, complex motion rigs or striking colour design, we want to honour the filmmakers who use their cameras not just to capture images, but to elevate every frame.

We want films where the visuals aren’t just beautiful but purposeful. Cinematography should support the narrative, shape emotion and draw the audience into the story. Whatever style or genre, if your camera craft brings the story alive, this is your moment.

Wedding

Capturing the heart of an intimate celebration

Filming a wedding is one of the most intimidating jobs: there are no second takes, no controlled environments and no room for missed moments. Weather shifts, tight timings and unpredictable locations add to the pressure. But when everything comes together, the results can be breathtaking. The finest wedding films don’t just document the day but  capture its emotion, personality and story, preserving a moment in time that couples will cherish forever.

Today, wedding films are a cinematic art form. With the creative use of light, movement, sound and storytelling, filmmakers can craft sweeping, emotionally rich narratives that rival high-end productions.

Event

For highlight edits of live events or live streaming

Events are about so much more than just covering a running order and capturing key moments. The best work reveals the story of the spectacle through interviews, behind-the-scenes insight, presenters, graphics or a smart structure that turns raw coverage into a narrative experience. Whether it’s a road trip, competition, expo, launch, fair, performance or multi-day gathering, we want to see work that does more than document.

Highlight coverage is a key skill where creativity can shine through. However, in a media climate of constant, on-demand content, it is livestreamed video that is one of the fastest-growing areas of professional filmmaking. From global product launches and sporting events to concerts, festivals, houses of worship and community gatherings, audiences expect immediate access – and polished coverage – wherever they are.

Events pose a unique challenge: there are no retakes and there’s no time for you to reset. This demands technical mastery, thinking on your feet and the ability to adapt under pressure, often with a small crew and tight – even live – turnaround. But when it works, viewers feel like they were right there in the moment.

For the award, we are excited to see what your audience saw – so either the full broadcast or a polished highlights edit that reflects the original stream without additional post-production enhancements.

Unpredictable movement – athletes, vehicles, animals or dancers – will push filmmakers to their limits. Great action stories go beyond the peak moments and explore the people, preparation, passion and drama behind them.

We celebrate filmmakers who skilfully transform live or fast-moving events into compelling, carefully crafted films or livestreamed coverage. If your camera thrives when the world speeds up, show us what you can do.

Future filmmaker

To celebrate the creative greats of tomorrow

Now, the next generation of filmmaking talent steps into the spotlight. Made for aspiring professionals, newcomers in their first two years of industry work and students or recent graduates, the future filmmaker award celebrates raw talent, bold ideas and fearless experimentation. We don’t expect Netflix-grade polish, though we welcome it. We’re looking for the sparks of creative brilliance, vision, originality and the courage to take risks.

This is an open category, so almost anything goes. Submit a narrative film, short documentary, social media series, music video, personal project or even a showreel that shows off your developing style. Whether the film was made for a client, created collaboratively or self-funded on a shoestring, what matters is the story you tell and how you tell it.

For students and recent graduates, any discipline counts: photography, filmmaking, broadcast and visual or mixed media. It is about what you produce, not study. Submit paid client work, a university project, team piece, personal film or even passion-driven experiment. The category has one purpose: to spotlight future industry leaders. If you’re driven, imaginative and already carving out your voice as a filmmaker, this is your moment.

Editing

For excellence in post-production and effects

A beautiful shoot and pristine audio are just the beginning. It’s in the edit suite that structure, rhythm, emotion and style come together. From pacing and plot to sound design, special effects, graphics, colour grading and transitions, editing transforms raw footage into a full story.

In this category, we celebrate expert editing and any genre is welcome. What matters is craft, from impeccable timing and inventive grading to creative motion graphics or bold stylistic choices. Submit a project you edited entirely yourself or with a team. The award now also includes the extraordinary world of visual effects. From traditional practical effects and green-screen work to cutting-edge VFX, CGI and virtual production using LED volumes, we embrace all modern post techniques. Today’s filmmakers have unprecedented creative tools at their fingertips, and we want to see how they surprise, move and immerse an audience.

Whether you built a whole world from scratch, crafted invisible effects that enhance realism or pushed stylistic boundaries with bold editing choices, this is your space to shine. Show us the post-production artistry that turns great footage into exceptional filmmaking.
