Canon unveils hybrid EOS C50 with 7K power

The new Canon EOS C50 packs open gate recording plus 7K Raw video and advanced connectivity into a lightweight cinema body
Canon has expanded its Cinema EOS range with the launch of the £3299 EOS C50, the most compact full-frame model in the line to date. Despite its small footprint, the C50 is built to deliver uncompromising image quality and flexibility for today’s fast-moving productions.
At its core is a new 7K full-frame CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC DV 7 processor, capable of recording 7K RAW video at up to 60P, 4K at 120P and 2K at 180P. Still photographers are also well served, with 32-megapixel high-resolution photos.
The EOS C50 is the first Cinema EOS camera to support open gate recording, using the full 3:2 sensor for maximum resolution and freedom in post. This enables horizontal and vertical edits from the same footage and provides a cinematic look. A new Simultaneous Crop Recording function even allows full-frame and vertical or square versions to be captured at once – ideal for multi-platform delivery.
Hybrid capability is central to the C50’s design. The interface switches automatically between Cinema EOS video menus and the familiar EOS R stills layout, while Dual Pixel CMOS AF II ensures fast, accurate tracking with subject recognition for people and animals.
Compact and modular, the C50 is designed for rigging flexibility and can be mounted horizontally or vertically. A detachable handle unit adds two XLR inputs, a REC button and zoom rocker for run-and-gun shooting. Connectivity is equally extensive, with dual card slots (CFexpress/ SD), HDMI, USB-C, timecode and Wi-Fi support.
With Frame.io Camera to Cloud compatibility, UVC streaming and Canon’s Content Transfer Professional app, the C50 integrates seamlessly into modern workflows.
