Laowa’s Sunlight 2x FF zooms bring full-frame anamorphic versatility in a compact design, while the 8-15mm f/2.8 fisheye debuts for Fujifilm GFX
Laowa’s Sunlight 2x FF lenses are the first full-frame front anamorphic zooms with a constant 2x squeeze. Following the success of Laowa’s Proteus primes, these Sunlight zooms are designed to bring the classic anamorphic look in a portable package. The series launches with a 40-80mm T4.5 and 70-135mm T4.5, weighing a decent 2.6kg and 2.8kg respectively. Each of the zooms have a parfocal design to maintain focus while zooming, boast minimal breathing and feature a constant T4.5 aperture.
Distinctive anamorphic traits include organic focus roll-off, oval bokeh and selectable flare options in blue, amber, silver or clear. There are also close minimum focus distances of 0.61m on the 40-80mm and 0.78m on the 70-135mm. The Sunlight lenses have 0.8M gears, dual-scale markings, a 77mm filter thread and 105mm fronts for matte box compatibility. Back focus adjustment and optional Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Leica L mounts are all available. The Sunlight zooms are $5999 each or $10,999 for a two-lens set. No UK price has been set.
Laowa has also announced that its distinctive 8-15mm f/2.8 zoom fisheye is now available to fit medium format Fujifilm GFX. It’s the widest-ever lens to fit the series from any manufacturer, and costs just £520/$699.
While the lens doesn’t fully cover the large sensor, it produces striking circular fisheye images at the wide end and diagonal fisheye perspectives at longer focal lengths.
A minimum focusing distance of just 16cm allows for dramatic close-ups, while a compact build of around 650g makes it practical for travel. The lens is also available to fit Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon EF mounts.
