Sony’s shotgun mic delivers pro audio in a compact package

Posted on Jul 15, 2025 by Adam Duckworth

Designed with input from award-winning sound engineers, Sony’s new flagship ECM-778 aims to become the go-to mono mic for cinematic dialogue and ambient detail

Sony has announced the launch of its new ECM-778 shotgun microphone, a premium on-camera and boom-mounted mic designed for professional filmmakers working on films, documentaries and high-end content production.

Built for those who demand pristine audio to match high-resolution visuals, the ECM-778 delivers exceptional clarity, rich tonal depth and pinpoint directivity – all in a lightweight, compact housing.

At just 176mm long and 102g, the ECM-778 is engineered for mobility without sacrificing performance. It features a newly developed microphone capsule and a precision-machined brass acoustic tube, working alongside a high-end electronic circuit board to produce clear, spacious high frequencies and stable mid-to-low tones. The result is detailed, immersive sound with excellent separation from ambient noise – even in acoustically challenging environments.

Designed for versatility, the ECM-778 can be mounted on a boom pole, attached to XLR-equipped cinema or mirrorless cameras, or used with external recorders. Its sharp directivity makes it ideal for isolating voices and important ambient details, while the built-in low-cut filter helps tame wind and handling noise. Two windshields – foam and fur – are included for indoor and outdoor use.

The body is machined from aluminium for durability and vibration resistance, making it suitable for location work in demanding conditions. Sony developed the mic in close collaboration with film sound engineers, including Kenichi Fujimoto, a two-time Japan Academy Film Prize winner, who praised the ECM-778 as “the new axis” of cinematic audio capture.

With its high-resolution support beyond 20kHz, the ECM-778 is perfect for recording everything from dialogue and foley to natural ambience and music. Compact, rugged and refined, it’s a compelling new tool for pro audio workflows in modern visual storytelling.
