Mini test: Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW III

Posted on Nov 25, 2025 by Pro Moviemaker

After testing the Lowepro Protactic BP 450 AW III, it’s clear this 28L hybrid pack delivers on comfort, durability and quick-access storage

Words Adam Duckworth

For filmmakers who live out of their backpacks, Lowepro is a trusted name. Made up of 86% recycled material, the Protactic BP 450 AW III has been updated with improved access, better protection and a strong nod toward sustainability. This 28L hybrid pack is ideal for those carrying stills or video gear, with multiple access points, organisation and durability that shrugs off years of travel abuse.

The moulded EVA back panel is designed for airflow and comfort, with perforations and ripple patterns for cooling. A dual-density harness spreads the weight evenly, while the removable padded waist belt and sternum strap help stabilise the load.

Yet, the new strap design may not suit everyone. Under lighter loads comfort is excellent, but once you’re pushing 20kg or more fatigue can creep in. Those with narrower shoulders might find the harness system a bit unforgiving on long hikes.

The Protactic series has always excelled at versatility, and the BP 450 AW III continues that trend with dual side doors, a wide top opening and full back-panel entry. Whether on the move or laying the pack flat for full set-up, your gear is always accessible.

Inside, the divider system is flexible so you can create custom compartments for cameras, lenses, gimbals or audio gear. The dividers have improved, with pressed ends to let them fit snugly against curved corners. But the hook-and-loop fasteners are so strong that adjusting them is a real battle. Once set, nothing moves, even if the bag takes a knock.

A compartment safely holds a 16in laptop, large stretch pockets allow tripods or water bottles and the hybrid webbing system supports Lowepro’s range of Sliplock accessories as well as MOLLE pouches and PALS panels, making it ideal for attaching extra lens cases or pouches. Two included straps make it easy to lash on bulkier gear.

The BP 450 AW III is a purpose-built filmmaker’s pack. Wide top access is great for grabbing a rigged mirrorless camera and side doors are ideal for fast lens swaps. Zippered pouches keep accessories separated and accessible, and an included cover provides full protection against rain and dust.

While it isn’t exactly lightweight when fully loaded, it’s a tough unit. The structure doesn’t collapse and the laptop padding and reinforced dividers protect delicate gear.

The Lowepro Protactic BP 450 AW III remains one of the most versatile camera backpacks around. It offers solid build quality, great access options and modular flexibility that’s ideal for filmmakers juggling lenses, recorders, drones and accessories.
