Big Test: Sony FX5

We tested how the Sony FX5 performs when deadlines are tight, subjects move unpredictably and there is no second chance.
It’s hard to have missed the explosion of hype around Sony’s FX5. Since its launch, it has dominated camera headlines, social media feeds and YouTube channels, with filmmakers dissecting every specification and debating if it represents the biggest leap forward for the Cinema Line since the original FX3. We’ve also covered the announcement extensively.
But specifications don’t make great films. What matters is how the FX5 performs on real productions, which of its new features genuinely change the way you shoot and whether it is worth buying – especially if you are already invested in another system.
We were given early access to a pre-production FX5 before the official launch and used it where it counts. We tested it in the studio recording X-OCN Raw LT for the ultimate in quality, on commercial productions and trackside at a sweltering championship motocross event, where fast action, extreme heat and rapid turnaround put the camera under real pressure. Back at base, we ran our usual image quality, ISO and noise tests to complete the picture. Here’s our magnificent seven things that really matter about Sony’s latest Cinema Line model. The Raw difference is real
With the world going wild for the FX5’s open gate, triple-base ISO, 32-bit float and tilt-everywhere screen, it’s easy to overlook the biggest benefit this camera offers to the final work you produce, and that’s its internal Raw capture. This is the FX5’s biggest leap over the FX3, FX2, FX30, FX6 and all the mirrorless Alpha cameras.
Rather than relying on an external recorder, the camera can capture 16-bit X-OCN Raw internally to CFexpress Type A cards in three flavours: LT, C1 and C2. LT is the biggest file size of all, made to match the files from the Burano and Venice II cameras. C1 and C2 are unique to the FX5 and are more compressed in a bid to reduce file sizes to a more manageable rate. This makes the workflow cleaner and far more practical for documentary and run-and-gun shooting.
Our studio tests in X-OCN LT reveal exactly what Raw should offer, which is greater flexibility. But there are also dramatically improved pictures with lots of dynamic range and beautifully lifelike colours – the best colours we’ve ever had out of a Sony.
Of course, shooting Raw demands an extra stage of post-processing and, at the moment, the only Raw converter we have access to is a Sony Raw Viewer Beta, although there’s a beta version of DaVinci Resolve in the pipeline. And there’s a chance all the other NLEs will follow.
The extra data in a 16-bit file compared to a ten-bit allows for far more aggressive colour grading before images begin to break apart, and it doesn’t bake in colour space, LUTs, Log and the like. Recovering highlight detail is noticeably easier, while shadows can be lifted further without introducing the blotchy artefacts or colour shifts that often blight lesser codecs. Banding in the sky is banished and skin tones also held together well, giving more confidence when fine-tuning the final look.
The trade-off, inevitably, is storage. Even the relatively compact X-OCN LT files are significantly larger than XAVC options, officially calling for the fastest Type A cards, although we did manage to record to fast SDs too. You’ll need plenty of capacity back in the edit suite, especially if working with multiple cameras or long-form productions.
C1 and C2 options are more compressed than the LT option, which has a bit rate of 389Mbps at 4K⁄24p. At the same setting, the C1 uses 289Mbps, with the C2 at 232Mbps. In comparison, 10-bit XAVC S-I All-Intra is actually 240Mbps, while XAVC S is just 100Mbps. But this means you can use 16-bit C2 and take up less space than XAVC S-I in 10-bit. We compared the two and the C2 wins out every time in terms of colours and grading potential.
Although C1 and C2 don’t offer quite the same quality as LT, they do provide the ultimate flexibility to get your exposure or white-balance wrong yet still get accurate colours and pull details from blown highlights or from deep shadows. For most users, the quality difference is not immense.
That doesn’t mean Raw is always the right answer. For our motocross shoot, where speed of turnaround mattered more than absolute grading latitude, we used some C2 Raw files, but XAVC S-I and even XAVC S proved an excellent compromise. The All-Intra codec delivers robust image quality with smoother editing, with the more standard option not far behind. And S-Cinetone gamma looked polished enough to require only minimal tweaks before delivery. Unless you’re pushing colour hard or shooting high-end commercial work, Sony’s conventional codecs remain impressively capable, making the FX5 just as comfortable shooting efficient broadcast-ready footage as cinema-grade Raw. Finally, Sony’s FX5 produces colour and quality that are as good, if not better, than its rivals.
Throw open the gate
Sony users have been requesting open gate recording, a feature many rival brands already have, and finally it’s here. Instead of capturing only a widescreen crop of the sensor, the camera records the full 3:2 sensor area, giving filmmakers far greater flexibility in post-production.
The most obvious benefit is reframing. A single shot can be cropped into traditional widescreen, vertical social media or square formats without having to shoot separate versions. It’s ideal for content creators and commercial productions delivering to multiple platforms. But that’s not the only option, as not everyone needs to produce multiple crops. Open gate also provides more freedom to straighten horizons, adjust composition or add digital stabilisation while still maintaining high resolution.
For filmmakers using anamorphic lenses, it’s even more valuable. Recording the entire sensor preserves the maximum image area before de-squeezing, allowing wider fields of view and making better use of specialist optics. Open gate inevitably creates larger files and requires a little more processing power in post, and does limit frame rate options. Once you’ve experienced the freedom of having the whole sensor available, it’s difficult to
go back to recording only part of it.
The benefits stack up
At the heart of the FX5 is a stacked full-frame sensor and it brings real-world benefits. Unlike a conventional CMOS sensor, a stacked design has built-in memory so data is read far more quickly.
The most noticeable advantage is a significant reduction in rolling shutter. Quick pans, handheld movements and rapidly moving subjects produce far less of the ‘jello effect’ that plagues slower sensors, making the FX5 a much better choice for action, sport and gimbal work. It also enables higher frame rates, quicker autofocus calculations and more responsive subject tracking.
In our motocross tests, the FX5 coped confidently with bikes charging across the frame, while rapid camera movements produced minimal skew. The faster readout also contributes to more accurate autofocus and helps process huge amounts of image data without compromise.
Although it isn’t a global shutter sensor like Sony’s A9 III, the FX5’s stacked architecture narrows the gap considerably. Combined with excellent dynamic range and impressive low-light performance, it is the biggest hardware upgrade over the FX3 and underpins many of the camera’s headline features.
Make mine a triple
Sony has given the FX5 three base ISO settings – 800, 4000 and 12,800 – and it’s a total winner. Where the older FX3 had dual base ISO, these were at 800 and 12,800. There’s simply a massive difference between them, which requires changing in ND filters that can affect colour.
ISO 800 remains the sweet spot for well-lit productions, while ISO 4000 is ideal for indoor locations and dull conditions, offering a clean image. Even ISO 12,800 delivers surprisingly usable footage, with noise controlled and colours consistent rather than washed out or blotchy.
Dual Gain technology takes things a step further by reading the sensor twice – once at low gain and once at high gain – before combining the information into a single image for maximum dynamic range without introducing objectionable noise. But reading the data twice slows down the available frame rates and worsens rolling shutter. It’s there if you need it and know its limitations.
The result of all this is a camera that feels remarkably adaptable across changing lighting conditions. Whether shooting bright exteriors, dim interiors or fast-moving documentary work where lighting can’t be controlled, the FX5 maintains impressive image quality and gives filmmakers greater confidence to keep rolling rather than reaching for extra lights or constantly adjusting exposure.
The need for speed
One criticism we have levelled at many recent cameras is the lack of progress in slow motion, especially uncropped and in high quality. Like the Freefly Ember, Pixboom has answered the call with its 1000fps, 4K specialist high-speed camera. But in the vast majority of non-specialist cameras, 120fps at 4K is the top number.
The new FX5 offers 4.5K in 120p at launch in 17:9 and 16:9 sizes, and a promised firmware upgrade will bring 4K in 240p – but it won’t be until at least August 2027. We have seen the results of the 4K⁄240p, albeit from beta firmware, and it’s incredible. The FX5, like several high-end Sony cameras, can already shoot 240fps in HD, but it is not a super-sharp option and it hampers AF performance in many cases. The 240fps in 4K will make this speed available to all and the leap in footage quality can’t be underestimated. For fans of super slow-motion, it’s the one big reason to buy the camera – despite the wait and crop.
The firmware update will also unlock features such as 5K open gate X-OCN at 120fps, open gate recording in XAVC S-I, as well as a frame-grab option to take a still shot. The FX5 does not currently have any stills options, so this will be a welcome feature, even if just for YouTube thumbnails.
In your face
If you are used to the menu system of Sony mirrorless cameras or the FX3, then be prepared to learn a whole new menu system as this borrows much of the user interface from Sony’s flagship Cine Alta cameras. Burano or Venice shooters will love it and it brings a clear advantage in certain areas, making the FX5 feel like a far more serious cinema tool.
The interface offers many more options than the FX3, which means new users may initially find it intimidating. Some settings are buried within cinema-specific menus that will be unfamiliar and the touchscreen can still feel less responsive than a modern smartphone. There are Cine EI modes
and custom modes to deal with, and each major change of setting requires a reboot of the camera. But you can customise lots of things like frame rates, for super-slow rates that create blurry effects, and remove noise reduction so you can apply it in post to suit your shot.
And the new Big6 home screen puts the most important shooting settings, such as frame rate, shutter angle, exposure tools and LUTs, just a tap away, while dedicated false colour, waveform and focus assist displays make judging exposure and focus far quicker. There’s even a dedicated False Colour button.
The larger, brighter, 3.5-inch touchscreen is another welcome upgrade. Its four-axis articulation makes it easier to compose from awkward angles, whether shooting handheld, on a gimbal or close to the ground. It’s large, bright and the menu items can be displayed around the edge during shooting.
However, the large screen means there is no room for a traditional Sony-style touchpad on the back so you have to either use the touchscreen or navigate with the new multi-function command dial on the top of the camera. It takes some getting used to, but that’s mainly because it’s a different way of working.
The EVF and XLR clash
Lots of people are big fans of an EVF, despite so many content creators using a rear screen only. To answer this, Sony has launched an optional, detachable OLED electronic viewfinder that plugs into a port on the top-plate then screws into threaded holes for safety.
There is also a brand-new XLR audio handle that slides into the MI Shoe and enables 32-bit float recording internally. Both significantly expand the camera’s capabilities, but there’s a catch: they occupy the same mounting point, so you have to choose one or the other.
The new £650⁄$698 OLED EVF is a huge improvement for anyone who regularly shoots outdoors. While the larger, brighter LCD is excellent, direct sunlight can still make it difficult to judge exposure and focus accurately. The viewfinder offers a high-resolution, 7.07-million-dot HDR image that makes handheld shooting feel much more like using a traditional cinema camera. Not only that, it tilts 90° up so you can have more options for viewing,
The £779⁄$798 XLR handle transforms the FX5 into a serious production tool, adding two professional XLR⁄TRS inputs, supporting four-channel audio and 32-bit float. You can buy the camera in a kit with the handle for £5199⁄$5498, but no kit comes with the EVF.
Not being able to use both accessories together is an understandable compromise on such a compact camera, but one that prospective buyers should consider carefully when deciding how they will use the FX5 most often. However, aftermarket brands like Tilta and Mid49 are working on hardware solutions to allow simultaneous use of the XLR and EVF.
And on the subject of optional extras, the in-body image stabilisation can be removed by a Sony service centre – but there is a cost and it can’t be reversed. The IBIS is excellent, but for seriously hardcore filmmakers who don’t want a moveable sensor as the camera will be mounted on a moving vehicle or gimbal, it’s a good option.
The camera is packed with lots of other great features, such as an optional timecode cable, triple the cooling airflow of the FX3 thanks to a new fan, twin tripod mounts on the bottom plate, a plug-in power port and Ethernet port, tally lamps and the AI-powered subject recognition AF and white-balance.
Then there’s an improved clear image zoom, gyro metadata for post-production stabilisation and even more. That’s pretty much everything that serious filmmakers need, apart from internal ND filters or an SDI output.
The FX5 isn’t trying to be a hybrid stills camera. It’s a dedicated cinema camera that packs flagship performance into a remarkably compact body – and it feels every inch the professional filmmaking tool Sony intended it to be.

Verdict
Sony hasn’t simply replaced the FX3 but has redefined what a compact Cinema Line camera can be. The combination of internal X-OCN Raw, open gate recording, a stacked sensor and Cine Alta-inspired operation makes it one of the most capable filmmaking tools in its class. Especially when 240fps in 4K arrives.
Sony users will find upgrading hard to resist, while filmmakers using Canon, Panasonic or Blackmagic now have a compelling reason to look across the fence, even if some of the FX5 specs are available on rival cameras. Nothing has got it all like the Sony.
If you don‘t need internal ND filters, this is one of the finest compact cinema cameras money can buy.
