Autofocus comes to Sigma cinema glass

Posted on Jun 4, 2025 by Adam Duckworth

Sigma launches AF Cine zooms for pro filmmakers who want autofocus

Autofocus comes to serious cinema lenses as Sigma aims to blur the boundaries between stills and movies by announcing the development of two new full-frame cinema zoom lenses – the 28–45mm T2 FF and the 28–105mm T3 FF – as part of its all-new AF Cine Line. They are the company’s first autofocus-enabled lens series designed specifically for cinema.

Launching in November 2025 (28–45mm T2) and Spring 2026 (28–105mm T3), the lenses will be available in L-Mount and Sony E-mount versions. Designed to meet the needs of filmmakers who are increasingly relying on autofocus, the AF Cine Line combines Sigma’s acclaimed Art lens optical performance with professional cinema mechanics and advanced autofocus technology.

Built on the optical foundation of the 28–45mm f/1.8 DG DN  Art and 28–105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art, both lenses deliver crisp resolution, soft bokeh, and strong flare control across all focal lengths and focus distances.

Sigma says the lenses have been crafted with precision at its Aizu factory in Japan using cutting-edge manufacturing processes.

Mechanically, the lenses offer limited focus rotation, clickless aperture rings, and 0.8M pitch gears, making them fully compatible with follow-focus rigs and other pro cine setups.

A key innovation is the inclusion of Sigma’s High-response Linear Actuator (HLA), enabling fast, near-silent autofocus with excellent subject tracking—ideal for gimbal, handheld, or documentary work where unpredictable moments demand instant focus response.
