Posted on Jun 11, 2024 by Pro Moviemaker

Discover Canon’s RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE lens, elevating VR content creation with user-friendly features and a realistic 3D viewing experience

Canon has unveiled the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE lens, the newest addition to the EOS R System, enhancing the realm of virtual reality (VR) content creation. This innovative APS-C lens follows the RF 5.2mm F2.8L DUAL FISHEYE, making high-quality 3D VR footage more accessible to a broader audience, including beginners.

Bringing Immersive Content to All

The RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE lens features dual fisheye lenses positioned side by side, simulating human binocular vision. This design captures images from slightly different perspectives for each lens, creating a stereoscopic effect that enhances depth perception in VR, resulting in a more immersive experience.

This lens expands the EOS VR System by providing a left and right perspective in a compact design. It is priced more affordably than its predecessors, making high-quality VR content creation more attainable while maintaining the EOS R System’s renowned optical performance.

Enhanced Features for User-Friendly Operation

The RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE boasts several user-friendly features:

  • 144-Degree Recording Angle: Offers a narrower field of view compared to VR180 shooting, making it easier to keep attention on the subject without worrying about equipment appearing in the shot.
  • Focus Ring: Can be assigned to control aperture or ISO, enhancing practical shooting solutions.
  • Autofocus (AF): The first 3D lens from Canon with One Shot Autofocus (AF), simplifying the creation process.
  • Air Sphere Coating and UD Elements: Premium quality coating and two UD elements per lens reduce aberrations like flare and ghosting, producing sharp images.
  • f/3.5 Aperture: Ensures high-quality footage in various lighting conditions, from dimly lit forests to brightly lit stadiums.
  • Rear Mounted Filter Holder: Allows for the use of both screw-on and gelatin filters, offering greater creative flexibility.

Realistic 3D Viewing Experience

When viewed through a compatible headset, the 3D stereoscopic lens delivers high levels of realism with its 144-degree viewing angle, providing a natural, forward-facing view that fully immerses the viewer. The 60mm interpupillary distance closely matches human vision, enhancing the 3D effect.

Meeting the Growing Demand for VR Content

With the VR content creation market projected to exceed $22bn by 2025, the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE lens makes creating 3D content more achievable across various sectors, including gaming, education, tourism, documentaries, and entertainment. Designed to work seamlessly with Canon’s EOS R System, it supports an efficient workflow for VR content creators.
