Gear of the Year Winners 2025: Support

We reveal the worthy winners in our ninth annual celebration of top-tier moviemaking support

It seems like every year we make a quip along the lines of: “and the winner of best supporting role goes to…” It’s our little slice of Oscars fun. But we all know that behind every great shot is solid support. Whether it’s a tripod that locks down a rock-steady frame, a slider that adds fluid movement or a gimbal that keeps things smooth, support systems are the quiet champions of filmmaking. Here’s why these winners stood out.

1. Tripod/Monopod

Sachtler Flowtech75 MS with Aktiv8T Head

Sachtler’s Flowtech legs are an old favourite for speed and versatility, but  when they’re paired with the Aktiv8T fluid head a dream team emerges. The Flowtech75 MS legs are lightweight yet stable and have rapid deployment thanks to the quick-release levers. Used with the Aktiv8T, operators can achieve smooth pans and tilts with precise counterbalance, perfect for professional productions. It’s the kind of kit that works so intuitively that it becomes invisible on-set. A new gold standard for tripod systems.

2. Slider/Dolly

Accsoon Toprig S60 Motorised Camera Slider

With Accsoon’s Toprig S60, movement looks and feels effortless. This motorised slider enables smooth, repeatable camera motion with precise speed and timing control. Compact enough for travel yet robust enough for pro rigs, this slider is popular with everyone from indie filmmakers to commercial shooters. Its integration with the wider Accsoon ecosystem and its intuitive controls make it really stand out, as does its affordability compared to higher-end cinema sliders. The S60 hits the sweet spot.

3. Rig

Vocas Lightweight Base Plate

A good rig should support your camera without weighing you down, and Vocas’s Lightweight Base Plate nails it. Designed for modern cinema cameras, its Arri-standard rosettes and 15mm rod mounts are designed to balance durability and portability. It’s strong enough for heavy-duty set-ups, but light enough to keep handheld shooting manageable, making life quietly easier on-set.

4. Stabiliser/Gimbal

DJI RS 4 Pro

DJI continues to dominate the gimbal game, as shown by the impressive new RS 4 Pro. Lighter, stronger and smarter than ever, it supports heavy loads while maintaining DJI’s trademark smooth stabilisation. The improved motors and refined autotune system ensure a quick set-up process, while remote control and integrated LiDAR further expand creative possibilities. Its modular ecosystem makes it a tool that adapts to almost any production environment. For those chasing cinematic motion, the RS 4 Pro is the stabiliser of choice.

Kenro Karoo 3-in-1

Not every filmmaker has the budget for top-of-the-range support, which is why we’ve singled out the Kenro Karoo 3-in-1 for praise. Compact, versatile and affordable,
it converts between tripod and monopod, making it ideal for content creators and run-and-gun filmmakers who need to travel light. While it won’t replace a professional system on-set, it’s an ingenious solution for those who value portability above all else.
