Sony’s RX10 V: zoom with a view

Just when you thought every serious content creator was destined to spend life lugging around a backpack full of lenses, Sony has revived a simple idea: why not bolt them all onto one camera?
The new RX10 V is the fifth generation of the brand’s do-everything camera, and its party trick remains an extraordinary Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* f⁄2.4-4 zoom, equivalent to 24-600mm. That’s everything from landscapes and groups to sport and distant wildlife without removing a lens, exposing a sensor to dust or wondering why you left the 400mm at home.
But Sony hasn’t simply dusted off the old RX10 formula. The new model brings much of the clever technology developed for its latest Alpha cameras.
Its 20.1-megapixel, one-inch stacked Exmor RS sensor is paired with a Bionz XR processor and AI-powered Real-time Recognition AF, giving it far more sophisticated subject detection and tracking. It can also record video up to 4K⁄120p and hammer away stills at up to 30fps with AF⁄AE tracking and no viewfinder blackout.
There is a larger Quad-VGA OLED EVF, Alpha-inspired controls and grip, plus Sony has fitted the bigger NP-FZ100 battery that boosts endurance to around 630 shots, more than 50% better than its predecessor.
The RX10 V isn’t going to tempt everyone away from a full-frame mirrorless and a bag full of premium glass. But for anyone who would rather shoot than change lenses, 24-600mm in one package remains a very persuasive and affordable option at £2200⁄$2298.
