Hybrid Sony FX2 brings huge stills spec plus a tilting EVF to the cinema line

The new FX2 is the entry-level full-frame camera in Sony’s Cinema Line that combines the body style of its FX3 and FX30 siblings but has a far better capabilities for shooting high-end stills plus a tilting EVF, making it ideal for hybrid content creators.

Its back-illuminated Exmor R sensor is based on the one used in the Sony A7 IV and offers up to 15+ stops of latitude using S-Log3 in video.

The camera offers Dual Base ISO for S-Log 3 of 800 and 4000, but ISO sensitivity for video can be expanded up to 102,400, making it ideal for low-light. The camera also supports multiple recording formats and records in 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra plus XAVC S-I DCI 4K at 24, among others.

Fast and slow frame rate options

The FX2 benefits from an extended shooting capability, with up to 13 hours of continuous recording in 4K/ 60p, thanks to its internal cooling fan and effective heat dissipation. It can also be used with the optional Sony XLR handle for improved audio.

The FX2 offers variable frame rates, allowing up to 6fps in 4K (for a maximum 2.5x slow-motion effect) and up to 120fps in Full HD (for up to 5x slow motion).  It supports Log shooting in Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO modes and users can import up to 16 user LUTs for on-camera preview for video.

There is S-Cinetone gamma as the default, along with a range of Picture Profile and Creative Look presets as well as anamorphic desqueeze in both 1.3x and 2.0x.

The FX2 features the same flat-top design as Sony’s Cinema Line FX3 and FX30 cameras, with built-in mounting points. The new body is slightly thicker, though.

The camera offers new Real-time Recognition AF with improved accuracy for human subjects, although its intelligent subject recognition extends to animals, birds, vehicles, and insects, with an Auto mode available.

Image stabilisation advances

The camera comes with Active Mode and Dynamic active Mode image stabilisation, a new function for Cinema Line cameras.

For stills, the camera shoots high-resolution 33-megapixel images with 10fps continuous shooting. And a brand new function allows users to take photos while recording and capture still images (JPEG or HEIF) in Log mode.

Usability is much improved as there is a new high-resolution 3.68-million-dot tiltable EVF. It also includes a vari-angle 3.0-type touchscreen LCD.

The FX2 costs £2,699/ $2,699 for the camera only, or bundled with the Sony XLR handle, it’s £3,149/ $3,098.
